Way of Saint Benedict: from Norcia to Montecassino - Cammini d'Umbria

Three hundred kilometres through the heart of Italy, crossing Umbria and Lazio as far as the border with Campania: this is the Way of St Benedict, a sixteen-stage itinerary retracing the life of the patron saint of Europe along paths, cart tracks and low-traffic roads, through the valleys and mountains of central Italy. The route links the three most important Benedictine sites: Norcia, the saint’s birthplace; Subiaco, where he lived for more than thirty years and founded numerous monasteries; and Montecassino, where he spent the final part of his life and wrote the Rule.

The Umbrian section comprises the first three stages of the route, which begins in Norcia, a beautiful town on the slopes of the Sibillini Mountains, before continuing towards Cascia, where Saint Rita, the “Saint of Impossible Causes”, lived. Here, for a stretch, the Way of St Benedict joins the Saint Rita Trail, a magnificent route through the woods, partly carved into the rock, which follows the course of the Corno River upstream. From here, through a rural landscape of rare beauty, the route heads towards Monteleone di Spoleto, a charming medieval village included among Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages, before entering Lazio and reaching Leonessa, at the foot of the Reatini Mountains.
