The Trasimeno route - Cammini d'Umbria

Franciscan Way of the Marca
An eight-stage route that starts in Assisi and reaches Ascoli Piceno via the 'places of Francis'. The two Umbrian stages constitute the beginning of the walk, which continues in the Marche region.
Franciscan Way of the Marca
The Cammino Francescano della Marca represents a unique opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the territory of central Italy. Crossing two regions in eight stages, the route follows the route that Saint Francis travelled eight hundred years ago during his preaching in the southern Marche region. It winds along the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennines and crosses the striking Sibillini National Park. This path offers a unique experience to fully appreciate the beauty of this area and to follow in the footsteps of the famous Franciscan Saint.
Umbria is the first two stages of the itinerary: from Assisi, the Saint's birthplace, we reach Spello, a medieval pearl enriched by its Roman remains. Then on to Foligno, a town that has always served as a crossroads for pilgrims and traders. The route runs along the suggestive spurs of the Mount Subasio Regional Park, offering breathtaking views, and passes the enchanting olive groves that characterise the Umbrian Valley. Crossing the territory of Foligno, the path climbs up to the Colfiorito pass, marking the border between Umbria and Marche, passing natural beauties such as the Menotre waterfalls and the Colfiorito Regional Park marshland.

From Assisi, passing along the slopes of Monte Subasio on cart tracks and asphalted roads amidst olive groves, we reach Spello, a medieval centre of which we can enjoy an enchanting view from above.
Leaving the historic centre of Spello, the route passes under the Roman arch of Porta Consolare, to proceed towards Foligno, a lively town in the Valle Umbra.
This stage runs uphill on paths that, after crossing the Foligno area, lead to the Colfiorito pass, on the border between Umbria and Marche.
Leaving Foligno, the route runs for a stretch along the bank of the Topino river, with its pleasant pools, small waterfalls and wild birdlife, to cross the village of Scanzano, leading along the Menotre river and skirting its enchanting waterfalls.
From the village of Pale the path continues uphill through the pastures of the Colfiorito plateau until it reaches the pass. From here, it continues to the Colfiorito marsh, a protected area of high naturalistic value, and finally reaches the village.
