Stage 4 - from Narni to San Gemini - Cammini d'Umbria

With your back to the door of the Church of San Francesco, continue straight for 60 m and turn left into Piazza dei Priori. Walk across the entire square and take Via Mazzini at the far right; after following it, you reach Piazza Galeotto Marzio, where you immediately turn right down the small descending street Via Marcellina. Follow it to the end and turn left onto Via Gattamelata, reaching the medieval gate Porta della Fiera on your right. Pass through the gate, turn left onto the descending Via Porta della Fiera, and continue to the intersection with the provincial road. Be careful when crossing. Once across the road, do not take the steps directly in front of you; instead, turn left into the walkway leading to the Augustus Bridge, located between the guardrail and the iron railing. Walk between the railing and the guardrail for about 40 m, then take the descending dirt path on the right, steep and protected by a wooden fence (here you can admire the remains of the Augustus Bridge). Continue on the pedestrian path for 150 m.

At the end of the path you reach a wide space; turn right and, after another 50 m, turn left onto the old medieval bridge (now an iron bridge). After crossing the bridge, continue for 50 m and turn left toward the Abbey of San Cassiano. Proceed for 250 m and, after passing the overpass, take the dirt road on the right at the fork. Continue for another 250 m until you reach a grassy parking area with a small building on the right. After passing it, you will find a rising path on the right. Take it and continue to the abbey. When you reach the iron gate at the entrance, take the path on the right and after 100 m turn left onto a dirt road, which leads to the main entrance of the Abbey of San Cassiano (Km 2.40 from the start).

After the visit, return to the dirt road and continue on it without taking the road you used to climb, walking 1.2 km. At the fork where the road becomes paved, turn right and descend for 700 m until you reach the SR205 Strada Amerina. Cross the road with great caution and descend along the road opposite. At the end of this path, you reach a paved road, with the cemetery wall in front of you. Turn right and walk 200 m to reach the SR3ter/Via Tuderte. Cross using the pedestrian crossing, then continue along Via Madonna del Piano until reaching the Church of Santa Maria del Ponte on the right (Km 5.20 from the start).

After the visit, with your back to the church door, turn right and continue along Via della Doga for 600 m until reaching Via Tuderte. After 50 m, turn left into Via della Vignola, follow it to the end, then continue along Strada di Ripabianca for a total of 900 m until meeting the Strada Provinciale Capitonese. Turn left and walk along the left side of the provincial road (be careful even though the shoulder is walkable). Take the small lane running parallel to the provincial road until you reach some steps on the right after 100 m. Climb the steps and at their top (take great care here), make sure the road is clear and take the overpass to the left. After crossing it, carefully cross the provincial road and walk for 100 m on the right-hand side where the shoulder is wider, until reaching a side road on the right. Turn right onto this internal road. After 40 m turn left, and continue for 500 m (first paved, then gravel) until you meet the provincial road again. Cross it and turn right, keeping to the left side, and continue for 300 m until reaching the Church of Santa Maria della Quercia (Km 8.10 from the start).

Cross the provincial road again to visit the church; afterward, with your back to the door, take the descending lane on the left. After 70–80 m turn right; in front of you is a gate, continue toward the field following the tractor track. Take the tractor path that descends to the right (use as reference the large tree in the middle of the field). Follow the path (careful: you walk along the edge of a deep ditch on the right) until crossing the tree barrier, going straight, then turning left and then right to pass through it. After passing the barrier, continue straight into the field and after 50 m turn right at a right angle (no reference points except the electric cabin at the edge of the field). Continue along the tractor road for 450 m until reaching the electric cabin, which you leave on the right, crossing the paved road. Take the tractor road directly opposite and continue for 150 m to a small bridge. After the bridge continue for 250 m until a large retaining wall. At the beginning of the wall (forming an angle), take the path on the left between the wall and a row of fruit trees. Continue for 100 m to reach a paved road. Turn left and follow the paved Strada di Fabbrucciano for 4.70 km without detours (slightly uphill, becoming gravel after 2.6 km).

At a very tight left-hand hairpin turn, be very careful: as soon as the ruined building ends, take the descending small road halfway through the curve (reference: pole with broken road mirror). Follow this gravel road for 900 m and at the fork by an olive grove turn left onto the descending gravel road toward a small wooded area with agricultural structures. Continue for 1.5 km until reaching a bridge over the Caldaro stream. Without taking any detours, cross the bridge and continue until reaching another bridge over a small stream. Here take the gravel road on the left before the bridge (do not cross the bridge!). Continue for 1.3 km without deviations (you pass on the left side of an old agricultural complex) until reaching a paved road, where a street sign indicates Via San Rocco. Turn right onto the gently descending paved road and continue for 200 m to the next fork. Then continue uphill along Via San Rocco. After about 900 m you reach another fork; keep left and after 30 m enter Via Socrate. Turn right and after 100 m reach the Strada Provinciale SS3TER. Cross carefully and continue on the sidewalk to the right.

Walk on the sidewalk for about 200 m until a large intersection. Continue along the sidewalk to the end of the guardrail and — with extreme caution — cross the provincial road opposite the newsstand. Continue on the sidewalk, use the crosswalk, and enter a small pedestrian passage (reference: large electric pole on your left). Continue to its end, turn right onto Via della Misericordia (lined with trees on the right), and follow it for 350 m (steep ascent) until reaching Porta Romana. Pass through the gate, continue along Via Roma for 150 m, and you will find the Church of San Francesco on the left.
