The route develops mainly on level ground, through cultivated fields and ancient farmsteads. After leaving Sansepolcro, the first section runs across the plain on paved roads. After a few kilometres, the route reaches quiet country lanes and enters Umbria. The climbs become gentler and the landscape softer.

The route then reaches Citerna, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, set on a hill in the Upper Tiber Valley and characterised by its ancient defensive structure, once used also for lookout purposes. The journey continues through horse-chestnut woods and oak groves, with a series of fairly gentle ascents and descents.

Once the ridge of the hills is reached, there are splendid views over the Tiber Valley and the Umbrian landscape, marked by rolling hills, small villages, woods and churches. The final section descends towards Città di Castello.
