In the heart of the medieval center of Orvieto, during the Christmas season, an authentic underground gem is preserved: a nativity scene set up in the Well of the Cava, featuring life-size mechanical figures placed within the caves of this evocative hypogeal complex. Scenic elements, lights, and costumes, tied together by ever-changing themes, tell the story of the Nativity through tradition, imagination, and contemporaneity.

Since 1988, Penna in Teverina has been home to one of the region’s most renowned artistic nativity scenes, born from the passion of a local resident. Over the years it has grown in fame and importance, and today it can be admired in an underground setting: among rock walls and vaults illuminated by more than 500 stars, water effects come to life, with mist rising from rivers and snow covering the mountains. In this atmosphere, over 200 meticulously crafted figures captivate visitors with mechanized movements that recreate ancient crafts and trades. All of this is accompanied by the music of Riccardo Cocciante.

In Calvi dell’Umbria, a unique monumental nativity scene is preserved. This representation of the Nativity is located inside the Oratory of Saint Anthony, in the Monastery of the Ursulines. The polychrome terracotta nativity scene consists of over thirty statues created between 1541 and 1546 by Giacomo and Raffaele da Montereale. It is housed within an apse, where the statues are arranged in four overlapping tiers: the Holy Family on the first level, the Magi above them, followed by a procession of figures on foot and horseback, and at the top, the celestial vault with four angels.

Calvi dell’Umbria itself is worth visiting during the Christmas season. Nicknamed "the city of nativity scenes," since 1982 the walls of houses in the historic center have served as perfect canvases for numerous artists, who have created over fifty open-air murals, all dedicated to the theme of the Nativity.

The monumental nativity scene of Calvi dell’Umbria transcends time and season: it can be visited year-round during the opening hours of the Museum of the Ursulines.

Among the most original artistic nativity scenes in Umbria is the one in Piediluco, which each year features a stunning floating nativity scene on the water.

The Nativity is brought to life through evocative white statues, which were originally made of papier-mâché and are now crafted from polystyrene and styrofoam.

The unique charm of this nativity scene lies in its placement directly on a boat in the middle of the lake. The statues appear to rise out of the water, creating breathtaking views amidst morning mist or glowing sunsets.

The village of Piediluco, nestled on the hillside, is equally enchanting: especially at night, when Christmas lights illuminate the scene, reflecting on the lake and transforming the entire village into a spectacular nativity backdrop.

Flagship of the National Exhibition of Artistic Crib “Presepi d’Italia” (Italian Cribs), the Ice Crib in Massa Martana is one of the most unique in Italy.

A “chilling” nativity scene, with its statues sculpted directly from large blocks of ice by skilled artists, is kept at a temperature of -17°C to maintain its beauty and intricate details.

Created annually since 2013, it showcases scenes, figures, or works of religious art.

Since 1984, every Christmas, the village of Marcellano transforms into a true “Bethlehem of Umbria”.

During the event, over a hundred costumed figures bring the streets of the village to life, meticulously recreating the trades and traditional settings of Palestine from two thousand years ago.

Visitors can wander among artisan workshops, markets, and inns, eventually reaching the evocative Nativity scene. Here, Mary and Joseph find refuge in a stable reconstructed outside the village walls, while the comet guides the Magi to adore Baby Jesus.

In the charming village of Armenzano, located in the heart of Monte Subasio Park, Christmas comes alive with an original and evocative reenactment: the living nativity scene of Armenzano.

Founded in 1985, this event involves about 50 participants, many of whom are local residents, portraying traditional Franciscan characters and reenacting Nativity scenes.

The narrow streets of the village, illuminated by torches and small fires, recreate the atmosphere of Bethlehem and host depictions of daily life from the time, transporting visitors back in history.

To complete the experience, a food stand offers mulled wine and local specialties.

Casacastalda, a small hamlet in the municipality of Valfabbrica, has recently created a nativity scene worthy of the Guinness Book of Records!

In past editions, the nativity scenes have featured designs that appeared on the hillside facing the village's viewpoint. These minimalistic designs, made with 800 meters of LED lights, have represented the Nativity in unique ways.

But that's not all: the designs change every year and are chosen through a dedicated contest.

Every year on December 8th, visitors can discover what will be the new design of the Casacastalda Nativity.
